Greetings, Crunch Crew! Summer is in full effect, and we are soaking up every last minute! The weather is warm, the sun is shining, and we are working up an appetite doing all of our favorite summer activities.
The History of the Sandwich
Historians claim that sandwich-style meals have been around for thousands of years. The modern sandwich we love so dearly is said to be invented in 1762 in England by John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich (no, really!). Legends say he was an avid gambler who would spend long hours at the poker table. One day, he had worked up an appetite, so he requested something from the kitchen that he would be able to eat with his hands, without having to get up from his seat. He was presented with 2 slices of bread with meat in the middle, and thus the sandwich was born.
Sandwiches took the world by storm, quickly becoming a popular meal. In 1952, the Wheat Flour Institute declared August as National Sandwich Month. It is celebrated each year by sharing sandwiches and recipes fit for the Earl of Sandwich himself.
Tips for the Perfect Sandwich
There are endless ingredient combinations for sandwiches, but we like ours with a crunch! Miniature sandwiches made with John Wm. Macy’s CheeseCrisps or Crostinis instead of bread are the perfect bite-sized snack for picnics, parties, and more! Here are some of our favorite combinations:
- Roasted red peppers, grilled chicken, sliced fresh mozzarella, and a drizzle of balsamic glaze between two of our John Wm. Macy’s Crostinis
- Grilled chicken, mashed avocado, sliced cheddar cheese and chipotle mayonnaise, paired with our John Wm. Macy’s Chipotle & Cheddar CheeseCrisps
- Smoked turkey, sliced cheddar cheese, sliced tomato, and mayonnaise on our John Wm. Macy’s Rosemary & Cheddar CheeseCrisps
- Sliced chicken cutlet, sliced lettuce and tomato, with a sprinkle of parmesan between our John Wm. Macy’s Melting Romano CheeseCrisps
The Perfect Sandwich Platter
When you are building a sandwich platter for an event, having a variety of options is very important! People have different dietary restrictions, so be sure to keep that in mind when planning your menu! It is best to have at least one deli sandwich with turkey or ham, one with grilled chicken, one with roasted vegetables, and one salad sandwich, with tuna salad, chicken salad, or egg salad. Don't forget to include John Wm.Macy's CheeseSticks and CheeseCrisps on your platter so your guests can crumble them on top of any sandwich for that extra cheesy crunch!
